Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) Therapy

The gold-standard autism intervention, delivered by certified BCBAs and trained behaviour therapists.

What is ABA Therapy?

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a scientific, evidence-based approach to understanding and changing behaviour. Rooted in decades of research, ABA examines how behaviours are learned and how the environment influences them — then applies that knowledge to help children acquire meaningful new skills.

ABA breaks complex skills down into small, teachable steps and uses positive reinforcement to encourage learning. When a child successfully completes a step or demonstrates a target behaviour, they receive immediate, meaningful praise or reward — making learning motivating, effective, and enjoyable.

ABA therapy is endorsed by Health Canada, the Ontario government, and leading autism organizations worldwide. Research consistently shows that high-quality, individualized ABA programs produce meaningful and lasting improvements in communication, social skills, daily living abilities, and overall quality of life for children with autism.

Who Benefits from ABA?

ABA therapy is effective for children across the autism spectrum, regardless of age or verbal ability. It is particularly powerful for young children, as the developing brain is most responsive to intervention — though meaningful gains are achieved at all ages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Research suggests that 6–20 hours per week of intensive ABA produces the best outcomes, particularly for young children. However, we tailor intensity to each child's profile, age, and family capacity. We start with a thorough assessment and recommend accordingly.

ABA is funded through Ontario’s Ontario Autism Program (OAP). New Horizons is an OAP-registered service provider. OHIP does not cover ABA, but OAP funding can cover a significant portion of therapy costs. We’ll help you understand your funding options from day one.

Both! We offer in-centre therapy at our Scarborough location, home-based sessions, and community-based support. Many families combine in-centre and home-based services for maximum benefit.

Duration varies depending on the child’s goals and progress. Most children continue for 2–4 years, with intensity gradually decreasing as they develop greater independence. Therapy is continuously evaluated and adjusted.

All ABA programs at New Horizons are designed and supervised by Board Certified Behaviour Analysts (BCBAs). Direct therapy is delivered by trained Behaviour Therapists (BTs) or Registered Behaviour Technicians (RBTs).
